Songwriter Tommy Botz Drops Latest Country Single “Maggie”

With A True Honky-Tonk Country Feel, The Song’s Story Goes Deeper – Showing Botz’s Lifelong Struggle with Alcohol and The Heartbreak It Causes

TommyBotz1

With a lot of today’s modern country music often glamorizing cold beers and heartache in an ever-continuous chain as a way to deal with pain  – Songwriter Tommy Botz is instead bringing his true-to-life struggle and its consequences to life through his music. Though prominent in many of the songs off his latest release “Family & Friends”, a powerful light is shined on his struggle with the bottle and the lives it can impact in his latest number one single “Maggie”, out now.

With the perfect amount of country twang, brilliant guitar and fiddle work and a deep crooning vocal arrangement a’la vocalist Billy Sullivan, it can be easy to forget the sad story behind the struggle in Botz’s lyrics in “Maggie”. From family life to living in a train car because of the bottle, the song paints a picture of the fall from grace many can suffer from the effects of alcohol and its tightened grasp on those afflicted. The heartfelt refrain says it all “Maggie I’m sorry, tell the kids goodbye // You know I gave it a hell of a try // Maggie I’m sorry, you don’t understand // That a drunk will sell his soul for just one bottle if he can” and goes even deeper with harrowing lines like “What do I do with the memory, that haunts me every day // Lord forgive me, I couldn’t see what the drink was taking away”. But with the songwriters true-to-life story of redemption in recent years, “Maggie” plays out not just as a story of woe but more as a warning to those who should seek help in dealing with the struggles of substance abuse.

Tommy Botz has come a long way. Now sober for 14 ½ yrs, he’s lived in a halfway house after having “crawled through the doors on May 3rd 2004 of The Ed Keating Center a homeless drunk with nowhere to go”. There he met a kind old man named Jack Mulhall who told him that if he followed some direction he would never have to live like that again. “I wasn’t always a homeless drunk. I had dreams and goals like every young man has. I always loved country and gospel music.” says Botz, whose early interest lead him to become the lead singer in two bands – The Chevells and The Caesars 5 early in his music career, winning a Battle of the Bands and winding up with an RCA recording contract. But after the loss of their guitar player and their contract being pulled, Botz’s drinking got worse and soon penitentiaries became a way of life.

From broken marriages to lost jobs, no car, and no licence – living to drink and drinking to live became his routine. Finally, with several years of sobriety and working under his belt  – he made the decision to go for his dream and finally record some of the over 200+ songs he had written over the years.

One night while I was praying I heard in my heart – go for you dream and I will put someone in your life who believes in your music”, and after contacting Ante Up Studios owner Michael Seifert, the two began a collaboration that would become his 6-song EP “Family and Friends”.

As he continues to receive praise for his songwriting talent in the hopes that his music finds its way to Nashville and a potential collaboration with further established artists, “Maggie” and all of the songs off “Family and Friends” are sure to build a true fanbase for Tommy Botz in the coming year!

Off Her Brand New Album “Cry Like A Girl”, The Empowering Track Is One of Encouragement Amidst Heartbreak

Brooke1

Having just dropped her brand new album (OUT NOW via iTunes, Spotify, and Amazon), Singer/Songwriter Brooke Moriber is continuing to show her fans how to “Cry Like A Girl”! But with her latest single “Steal the Thunder”, which hit the Spotify New Music Nashville playlist earlier this month, and which she recently performed live for City Winery’s Cellar Sessions – Moriber focuses on what it means to learn from pain.

Through its rootsy Americana-driven melody that may seem fit to be played in a sad western barroom, the true message of “Steal the Thunder” is anything but that of melancholy, but rather keeping strength through trying times. “We are stronger than our weakness, if all the broken pieces make you cry, it’s alright” Moriber sings in the song’s refrain, continuing “In your deepest, darkest hour, don’t deny the storm its power // Make something bold and brave out of the pain, steal the thunder from the rain”. Keeping true to many of the central themes of the album, the song focuses more on connecting with your emotions in a positive way rather than letting them destroy your inner courage.

“Cry Like A Girl” was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee, with legendary producer Fred Mollin (Sheryl Crow, Vince Gill, Shawn Colvin) at the helm and mixed by 5 time Grammy Winner Chris Lord-Alge (Carrie Underwood, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen). The 11-track release delves into messages of self-discovery, empowerment, and overall growth, which Moriber says embodies the collection as a whole. “Itʼs a statement about the strength that comes from embracing your emotions and allowing yourself to heal and grow. The making of this album was a journey of self discovery for me”.

And with the latest single “Steal the Thunder” continuing the momentum that “Cry Like A Girl” has been gaining since it’s release just last month – Moriber will be bringing it to the stage LIVE for the official release show on Wednesday, June 12th at 7:30PM at Rockwood Music Hall – Stage 2 (196 Allen St, New York, NY 10002)!

Gnarly Karma Drops Second Single of 2017, “How Could I Love You”

As They Prepare to Head to Austin, TX This March For SXSW, Long Island Alt Rock Five Piece Releases Another New Track Packed with High Energy and Intensity

pasted image 0.jpg

February, 2017 (Huntington, NY) — With 2017 already off to GNARLY start with their single “Back Around” debuting back in January, Long Island’s own Gnarly Karma has dropped their second release of the year! “How Could I Love You” comes just in time, as the band prepares to head to Austin, Texas for the 2017 SXSW Conference & Festivals this March!

LISTEN: Gnarly Karma “How Could I Love You” via SoundCloud

The group consisting of members Mike Renert (Vocals, Guitar, Harmonica), Jarrod Beyer (Drums, Percussion), Ryan McAdam (Bass), Billy Hanley (Alto & Tenor Saxophone, Keyboard, BGV’s), and newest member Adam Sklar (Guitar) brings a wide and varied range of influences to the table equating to their unique sound, which is most often associated with that of Dave Matthews Band, Sublime, and Mumford & Sons, but not restricted by genre. Originally starting in 2012 with Renert and Beyer, McAdam and Hanley later came into the mix having gone to school together with Beyer, who’d also performed with McAdam in Alt band “We Love Radio”. Sklar joined in mid 2016 bringing a powerful guitar style ranging in influence from RHCP to Eric Clapton and Derek Trucks.

The band had an incredible 2016, which included performances at the Sayville NY Seafood Fest, NYC’s Legendary Bitter End, The Montauk Music Festival, an Exclusive Premiere of their video for “Grey Street” (Dave Matthews Band Cover) via Elmore Magazine, their TV debut on My Long Island TV and Verizon FiOS1’s Rick’s Rising Stars, opening for Robby Krieger of The Doors & Special Guest The Edgar Winter Band, AND being mentioned in a New York Times article regarding their studio: Montclair Records.

Though the “outer layer” of their music could be most closely associated with the alternative rock elements of bands like DMB, Mumford, or even O.A.R., a more unique style mixing a harder acoustic-punk, post-hardcore edge in many of their songs makes it evident that–like many bands often pigeonholed by genres–there’s more to find when you keep peeling. This comes to the forefront on their 2016 debut LP “Classic Breeze”, with songs like the acoustic driven “Neptune” evoking Jimmy Eat World’esque or even Taking Back Sunday comparisons, “Directions” could be more closely associated with that of Dave Matthews through not only Hanley’s eloquent horn arrangement but Renerts vocals as well. A tune like “Please Come Home” brings these elements full circle with its catchy chorus “Don’t ask me where I’m going // Don’t ask me where I’ve been” with overdubbed crowd vocals making the true live band experience unmistakeable.

With their newest single “How Could I Love You”, the band’s more hard-driven edge is illustrated yet again with their heavy-hitting instrumentation and powerful subtleties from its piano work to carefuly crafted lyrics. Renert sings the impassioned refrain “How could I love you, how could I care? // No one said it was gonna be easy” continuing “How could I love you, how could I care? // I guess this is just gonna be the end” through a heightened cacophony that truly shows the band’s growth as a dynamic unit.

With a number of various musical elements making up the true core of Gnarly Karma, the band has said of both past and upcoming performances We give it our all at every show, and do everything in our power to make sure the people that come to see us feel our energy and contribute to it”.

Bringing that energy into the new year with “How Could I Love You”, it’s evident the band will keep it going as they ready themselves for SXSW, and prepare to show a whole new batch of fans what they can bring to the table!
